Topanga to Receive Product Innovation Award at Lightfair International

Los Angeles, CA – April 30, 2011 – Topanga Technologies’ Advanced Plasma Lighting system was awarded platinum-level honors in the Components category of the 2011 Product Innovation Awards by Architectural SSL magazine, a leading lighting industry publication.

Architectural SSL will present the award to Topanga Technologies on May 17 during the LIGHTFAIR® International tradeshow in Philadelphia, PA. Topanga will demonstrate Advanced Plasma Lighting in booth #3738 at Lightfair, taking place May 15-19, 2011. The platinum award for APL was given national recognition in the spring issue of Architectural SSL magazine.

Advanced Plasma Lighting (APL) is a new solid-state-driven, high-intensity source designed to replace the inefficient lamps for high brightness applications in outdoor and commercial environments. APL is a proprietary configuration: an electrode-free plasma lamp placed external to the resonator that utilizes RF energy to illuminate the lamp. Its single-source lamp design allows for smaller and more flexible fixture design and footprint.

This new and patented system’s distinct advantages:

extending the range of fixture applications

allowing a higher lumen output

improving color quality

substantially more energy efficiency

Because it is filament free, phosphor free and increases efficiency as temperatures rise, APL ensures color consistency and low light degradation through the lifetime. APL offers efficient, tailored light that lasts 50,000 hours with replacement costs of less than $10. The microprocessor-controlled electronics provides dynamic instantaneous dimming from 20-100% with full control and networking, making APL superior in system performance.

In addition to recognizing the industry’s best luminaires and components and the companies behind them, the Product Innovation Awards honor leaders in research and development, industry standards, and lighting advocacy. “The mission of the program was to sort out the products that show the greatest promise across a wide field of functions,” said Jim Crockett, Editorial Director of Construction Business Media. “Award winners ultimately represent a peer-recognized selection of quality products that the architectural and lighting design community can feel comfortable specifying.”

About Architectural SSL Magazine

The Architectural SSL Product Innovation Awards (PIA) determine and honor the best solid-state luminaires and fixtures on the market, while also recognizing the companies behind the components that make up these light sources. The PIA program also recognizes leaders in categories ranging from those conducting cutting-edge R+D, to those helping in the development of standards as well as those pushing to make solid-state lighting a truly sustainable technology. Construction Business Media, headquartered in Chicago, IL is publisher of Architectural Products, Illuminate and Architectural SSL magazines. The company also operates the ArchLED Conference, markets and partners in TheContinuingArchitect.com educational platform, and maintains websites and electronic extensions of its print publications. www.architecturalssl.com

The US Department of Commerce’s Ryan Mulholland noted, “For attendees at Eco Expo Asia, Topanga was a popular example of a US clean and environmental technology that is globally competitive and ready to do business.”

While Mehran Matloubian presented an ongoing exhibit on the show floor featuring demonstrations of the APL system inside a robust low-bay garage light fixture, Brian Hermes participated in a panel discussion fitting with the event theme, “Business Solutions to Climate Change.”

During the Energy Efficiency panel session, Brian gave an overview of lighting efficiency business opportunities and trends, and revealed how the APL’s substantial electrical savings, superior performance and advantages over LED and HID for critical municipal outdoor applications can help cities achieve energy efficiency goals.

Prior to Eco Expo Asia, Topanga attended the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair, where outdoor lighting fixture manufacturers were delighted to learn that the APL saves greater than 40% energy in comparison to a 250W Metal Halide fixture, and a stunning 50% when compared to a 400W Metal Halide fixture.

Between the shows Mehran and Brian traveled to the City of Shenzhen China to accompany US Consul General to Hong Kong Stephen Young and US Consulate Commercial Officer Andrew Wylegala in meetings with Chinese government officials, including Edward Yau, Secretary for the Environment of Hong Kong.

The positive response to Topanga’s APL in Asia showed manufacturers are ready for unique technology – a new platform to sell that offers viable competition for induction, and that the global market is looking for performance and reliability in a technology that replaces HID while remaining as efficient as LED.

Emerging Technologies Summit Features Advanced Plasma Lighting

In its exhibit at the Emerging Technologies Coordinating Council’s Fall 2010 event “Accelerating Our Energy Efficient Future,” Greg Barry was able to showcase the benefits of APL for the utilities and electric provider community. Looking to future technologies for funding and R&D opportunities, regulatory representatives praised cutting edge energy efficiency innovations that play an important role in achieving California’s energy goals. Topanga’s demonstration of its plasma light engine at ETCC allowed utility industry representatives to secure commitments to utilize APL in field test sites throughout the State of California in 2011.

Plasma Adds Brilliant New Light to Street & Area Lighting Conference
with Roadway Fixture Demo

Topanga received acclamation at September’s IES Street & Area Lighting Conference when Greg, Brian and Mehran demonstrated the APL’s incredible potential efficiency and cost reduction in a popular luminaire design.

“We were able to provide a visible, side-by-side comparison between plasma and other light sources and the APL proved to be a bright new solution for the 175-450 watt category due to its 50,000 hour lifetime and 50% electrical savings,” said Brian.

The APL’s combination of a point source and solid state driver for small size, long life and high efficiency was a hit on the show floor when displayed inside a best-selling roadway, parking lot and area fixture. Show attendees commented that the APL’s uniform, consistent output of broad spectrum, superior quality white light makes it the best high lumen, energy efficient light source for parking lots, highways, street lighting and other high intensity applications.
